Boy Scout Adult Training Series
S10 – Troop Committee Challenge
(online)
This 25 minute multimedia course provides an excellent overview
of what Boy Scouting is all about, from the perspective of the
Troop Committee. This is a great session for any new Boy Scout
leader. Topics included are the aims and methods of Scouting,
roles of the Troop Committee, and who’s who in Scouting. It
concludes with an inspirational Baden Powell quote. To be a
“Trained” leader as a member of the Troop Committee, you also
need to take “Troop Committee Training.” Your district training
chair can arrange this one evening course at your unit, for your
troop committee.
S11 – Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is designed to help an
adult volunteer learn outdoor Scouting skills in a highly
hands-on setting. Topics include campsite selection, ropes,
woods tools (knife, saw, ax), fire site preparation and
building, cooking, first aid, plant and animal identification,
packing and hiking techniques, finding your way with map and
compass, Leave No Trace. This course is typically offered in
our council on a weekend, from Friday 6 PM – Sunday 2:30 PM.
S24 – Scoutmaster and Asst. SM Leader Specific Training
This 8-hour course addresses the needs of adults who accept
the responsibility of delivering the Scouting program to youth
by serving as Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. The
sessions are thorough, comprehensive and fun. Participants will
discover the essentials of their leadership positions and
realize that they can easily become successful Scout Leaders.
Discussions, group activities and video clips keep the sessions
lively and create a fellowship of learning.
S32 – Troop Youth Leader Training
Troop Leadership Training, No. 34306A, replaces the
Scoutmaster Junior Leader Training Kit. It is organized into
three one-hour modules, which can be taught individually or all
in one session. The content of the first session focuses on what
a new leader must know; the second session on what a leader must
be, and the third session on what a leader must do. Completing
all three modules qualifies the Scout to wear the "Trained"
patch under his badge of office. The new syllabus contains
leadership position cards that define each position in the
troop. Completion of TLT prepares the youth to attend National
Youth Leadership Training.
S33 – National Youth Leadership Training
This course is a six-day experience intended for senior
youth leaders in a Troop. It is conducted in a camping
situation. This course is an intensive experience in leadership
skills and some advanced scoutcraft skills training.
Participants must be 13 years of age before January 1 of the
course year, and must be recommended by their Scoutmaster. NYLT
is offered in mid-June of each summer, at Camp Oh-Da-Ko-Ta.
S76 – Trek Safety
Trek Safely is the Boy Scouts of America's recommended procedure
for organizing and carrying out outdoor treks that involve Boy
Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers. Trek Safely applies to
all types of outdoor experiences that involve trekking,
including hiking, backpacking, canoeing, horseback riding,
caving, rafting, kayaking, sailing, ski touring, mountain
climbing, and mountain biking. Trek Safely is designed to help
youth and adult leaders plan and carry out a safe trekking
experience for the members of their unit. Similar to Safe Swim
Defense, Safety Afloat, and Climb On Safely, it is not designed
to teach the skills of trekking. Units that choose to engage in
activities requiring specialized outdoor skills should seek
qualified instructors to help members learn and acquire these
skills prior to the outing.
S78 – National Advanced Youth Leadership Training
Course offered at Philmont Scout Ranch.
NAYLE will provide Scouts with a Philmont-based wilderness
encounter that motivates them to follow a life of helping others
succeed based on the values expressed in the Scout Oath and Law.
S79 – National Youth Leader Instructor Camp
Course offered at Philmont Scout Ranch
SA – Safety Afloat
In Safety Afloat, you will
review the boating safety unit, Safety Afloat, and cover the
nine defenses for safe boating activity. Please note that review
of either or both of these units online is considered helpful
but does not meet all the BSA qualifications for conducting
water-related programs. For more, and before conducting any
waterfront or boating activities, contact your local council.
SFS – Boy Scout Leader Fast Start
If you are an experienced Boy Scout leader, you can take Boy
Scout Fast Start in 15-25 minutes. For new Scoutmasters and
Assistant Scoutmasters, this is a text-based course to give you
an overview of the aims and methods of Boy Scouting, how a Boy
Scout Troop is run, the role of the Troop Committee, youth
leadership, the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters.
Further training is available as Leader Specific Training and
through the Boy Scout Roundtable (in Southeast Wisconsin, each
district’s Boy Scout Roundtable meets on the 1st
Thursday of the month). Your Unit Commissioner can also be a
great resource.
To be a “Trained” leader, you also need to take “Scoutmaster
Fundamentals” (indoor) and “SM and ASM Leader Specific Training”
(outdoor). These courses are offered several times a year in
our council.
SSD – Safe Swim Defense
In Safe Swim Defense, you will
cover the eight crucial defenses for safe waterfront activity in
Scouting (supervision, fitness, safe area, lifeguards, lookouts,
ability grouping, buddy system, and discipline). Before a BSA
group may engage in swimming activities of any kind, a minimum
of one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training,
have a commitment card with them, and agree to use the eight
defenses in this plan.
